Here we go again...
It looks like a couple of copycat punks have decided to set off some detonators on the tube. Details are still sketchy, but
it seems that it was more of a scare tactic than anything, and that there's only a hanful of minor injuries. As you may have
guessed because I'm able to post this, I'm tucked away safely at work.
I might as well take the opportunity to segue into some thoughts that have been rolling around in my head since the last
attack 2 weeks ago:
1) Terrorism is profoundly stupid. Is the point retribution, or to raise awareness? In either case, the message is lost
among the cacophony of outrage. Nice work, dumbasses- you've ensured the entire world is galvanized against you and everything
you stand for (not that we even bothered to care what that is at this pont).
2) Terrorism is perpetrated by cowards. Attacking an unsuspecting and defenseless populace doesn't prove your strength, but
rather points out how worthless you are that the only option is to indescriminately lash out against the people least involved
in your plight.
3) Terrorism is for morons. Only the brain damaged would think that blowing yourself up in a flash is a worthwhile expenditure
of one's life. If you're that committed to something, dedicate your life through political activism and community involvement.
I guarantee you'll get a lot more accomplished.
Frankly, I'm getting fed up with the typical Muslim response of issuing PR statements that are intended to prevent random
vigilanteism against their own people. If it's really a mandate of Islam to not harm women, children, and innocents, then
step up and point out who is doing this. Outside of the Edgware station in London, several muslims have posted Iraqi flags
and messages of condolences in Arabic, along with stacks of flowers. A nice gesture, but it'd be nicer to prevent this, wouldn't
it? I'm really amazed at the size of the muslim community here in London, but it doesn't seem to integrate or participate
with the rest of society. If they were so grateful for the opportunites and freedoms this country extends them, the least
they could do is police their own community.
I have to say, I was quite moved when the entire city of London stepped out of their offices and into the streets to observe
2 minutes of silence in commemoration of the 7 July bombings.
A couple of quotes keeping bouncing through my head:
"I may disagree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it"
-Voltaire
“Those who would trade safety for freedom deserve neither.”
- Thomas Jefferson
I keep pondering what an appropriate price for freedom may be. I had been taught that the intent of the Constitution is that
the rights of one individual end where the rights of another begin. Although Voltaire and Jefferson are obviously much smarter
than myself, I'm beginning to think the Muslim community shouldn't be given margin in any community until they demonstrate
they can adhere to social contract.
I can't wait until we find an alternate energy source to oil and wash our hands of the middle east entirely >:\

you'll take it and like it
So, here's my first attempt at posting something to keep the burning curiosity
of the masses at bay for a while. This is the section where I'll be keeping my (hopefully) witty and insightful commentary
on life abroad. But, I'm getting sick of messing with this site-builder application, so all you get for now are the
pictures I've taken to date. Check back periodically to see if the muse has inspired me to make updates.
Take care...

Attention Seattle-ites
Back in the glory days of my Go2Net employment, one of the people I enjoyed hanging out with most was
Layne Freedle. Like me, he was in denial of his age and lived like he was still 22 years old (or so). Layne
has an incredible capacity for living life, and pretty much has a story for everything. Depending on how long you've known
me, I've probably tried to drag you to a Redneck Girlfriend show at some point, who Layne played lead guitar for. A couple
of weeks ago, Layne passed out during a perfromance, and had to undergo a massively dangerous series of open heart surgeries.
Well, the music community is responding in kind with a benefit show and auction to help defray the enormous medical bills
he and his girlfriend Kris are now facing. Please, if you have the time, inclination, or funds, help a guy out.
If you're interested in the entire scary story, read Kris' journal in the "news" section.
